Opis wydarzenia

Security Education Department of the National Security Faculty, War Studies University and The American College of Greece are pleased to announce the International Conference NATO in the Face of Emerging Security Challenges on its Eastern Flank taking place online on 31 March 2023.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has shaken the global security architecture. The ongoing war has involved multiple aggressive actions forcing a reaction from NATO along with a transforming strategic landscape. NATO has remained committed to its role of protector and guarantor of the freedom and security of its members and partner states through both political and military means for several decades. Although Europe was focused on the first of these pillars for some time after the end of the Cold War, Russia's breaking of international law in 2014 - an inconceivable event - has changed the perspective. Changing borders by force, occupying parts of a neighbouring country and using separatist forces against it had seemed part of a distant past but returned with a striking impact. All of this raises questions about the security of the NATO’s eastern flank:

  • What steps should be undertaken to secure it against hostile Russian actions targeted at the region from the Baltic Sea through Central Europe to the Black Sea and the threat they pose to the Balkans and the Caucasus?
  • What else, apart from the action already taken, can help provide security to the Baltic region, the eastern flank and the Black Sea region?
  • What is the role of the states that make up NATO’s eastern flank in supporting Ukraine's resistance and its fight for freedom and sovereignty?

We are also looking to discuss and evaluate the U.S. and NATO’s military assistance to the above-mentioned regions, the debates in the U.S. congress related to it, U.S. Ukrainian policy oversights, and the status of the European Reassurance/Deterrence Initiative.

The Conference will be opened with a keynote speech given by Professor Constantinos Filis from The American College of Greece. A closing keynote address will be given by Professor Bert Chapman from Purdue University.

The event will be held online via MS Teams platform on 31 March 2023. A link to the event will be sent to all registered attendees by email.
